These two dropcaps were made as homages to two of my favourite artists; Hilma af Klint and Sol LeWitt. I love creating repetitive patterns, and found two new ways of doing so in these works.
The Q was inspired by af Klint's love of nature and the mysteries of life and the unknown. In my garden I gathered seed pods from an acacia plant and part of the flower of a banskia. I took photographs of them in the studio and then used Lightroom, Illustrator and Photoshop to combine them together.
When brainstorming ideas to create a homage to Sol LeWitt, I kept thinking of the exhibition I saw at the Gallery of NSW where huge walls were entirely covered with pencil drawings. Whilst, LeWitt is no longer alive, his wall drawings are continued to be created as they have been since 1969, by assistants. I imagine the amount of pencils they would end up using in the process, so decided to incorporate the pencil into the A. His work uses repetition and grids heavily, which let to me choosing to use these qualities, along with an ordered formula.
